What is the SVAA?

The Suffield Volunteer Ambulance Association was founded in 1976. We are a private, non-profit organization that provides emergency ambulance service to the town of Suffield 24-hours-a-day, 7 days a week.

Our Volunteers.

The SVAA averages 70 active, volunteer members – townspeople, homemakers, students, retirees and business owners – representing all age groups. They contribute more than 20,000 hours as medical providers and in training and administrative roles.

Each medical provider passes certification tests at the state level after several months training. Providers maintain and advance their certification through frequent training classes and drills throughout the year.

Volunteer medical providers save our community medically and financially, providing 19,541 hours in 1999.

How we are funded.

The SVAA relies on the following sources:

• Private Donations, memorial gifts and other tax-deductible contributions
• Support from the Town of Suffield, which pays the salaries and benefits for a few paid members who staff the ambulance when the volunteers are not available, particularly during the daytime hours.
• Patient billing, which includes insurance and Medicare payments for the patients we serve. The amount charged is regulated by the state and covers less than one third of our expenses. Note that most health plans pay for ambulance charges.
